In the case of South Philadelphia High School in the Philadelphia School District, however, the school and its district failed on both fronts.
The following is a timeline of events that transpired over the last year at South Philadelphia High School and in the Philadelphia School District. On December 3, 2009, 26 Asian students were attacked and beaten by a large group of their peers, mostly African American, throughout the school day at South Philadelphia High. After meeting with district officials following the attacks, a group of over 60 Asian students from South Philadelphia High remained unconvinced that their safety at school would be ensured and organized an eight day-long boycott. Dozens of students have already committed to meeting during school hours.
The complaint charges that the District and School acted with "deliberate indifference" to the harassment against Asian students and "intentional disregard for the welfare of Asian students" at SPHS. The complaint cites numerous instances in which school officials were notified by teachers and Asian students about the increasingly hostile environment towards Asian students but failed to take any steps to prevent the widespread attacks on Asian students on December 3, 2009.
On December 3, 2009, large numbers of Asian immigrant students from SPHS were assaulted in and around the school throughout the day. In February, a little more than two months after the attacks, the Philadelphia Schools District commissioned a report on the violence that had occurred at South Philadelphia High School. In particular, it does not address how the ongoing harassment of Asian immigrant students and the school's failure to respond creates a hostile climate for Asian immigrant youth at South Philly.
In April, another Asian student at South Philadelphia High School was assaulted, but the school district ruled that the student had been attacked "carelessly but unintentionally," despite a conflicting witness account.

Teresa Scanlan is a youngest Miss America till the pageant was started since 1921.

Looking at the two regular season games that the teams split, one could say there was one play in each game that could have turn the win into a loss and vice versa. Raymond Royal Marshall, a crucial cog on syndicated talk show host Neal Boortz’s radio team as a sidekick and engineer, has died. Marshall has worked with Boortz for 17 years, according to the WSB Radio biography for Marshall.

Rahul Bali, Marshall’s producer from 1998 to 2005, said he watched Marshall mature from happy-go-lucky bachelor to devoted father and community member. WSB Radio announced the sad news at noon today. Janet napolitano, arizona shooting victims
"I am deeply saddened by reports that Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, Chief Judge John Roll and others were attacked today in Tucson, Arizona. There is no place in our society or discourse for such senseless and unconscionable acts of violence. Gabby is a steadfast representative for southern Arizona and both she and John are dedicated public servants.
"The Department of Homeland Security has offered all possible assistance to the FBI and the Pima County Sheriff's Office, who are leading the investigation. My thoughts and prayers are with Congresswoman Giffords, her family and staff, and all those who were injured in this difficult time."
The package was addressed to Napolitano and was believed to be similar to others found in two incidents involving packages delivered to Maryland state offices on Thursday, a Department of Homeland Security official said. No one was seriously injured in those incidents.
“Initial reporting indicates this incident bears characteristics similar to the flaring package incidents at two Maryland state facilities yesterday,” the DHS official said.
Napolitano’s primary office is across town from the mail facility.
Napolitano returned late Thursday from a weeklong trip to Afghanistan, Qatar, Israel and Belgium to discuss terrorism and transportation security.
The FBI, postal inspectors and local police were investigating the latest incident.

New hanover county schools - Despite sleet and snow sticking to the roads in Wilmington Monday morning, about 75 people attended a training seminar at the New Hanover County Health Department on a creepy crawly subject- bed bugs.
Common signs of a bed bug infestation, he said, include bite marks that happen during sleep, fecal dots on mattresses, white eggs in crevices around the bed frame, bugs in mattress folds and sheets, rusty-colored blood spots on mattresses and a sweet, musty odor.
Here is the official announcement from the New Hanover County Schools regarding school interruptions due to the weather condition:
“Due to current weather conditions, New Hanover County Schools will be closed on Tuesday, January 11th for students and staff.”
New Hanover County Schools, located in southeastern North Carolina, is the 12th largest school system in the state and estimated to be the 311th largest in the U.S. The district has 43 fully accredited schools and about 24,000 students.

Auburn Oregon Game Time - Both teams are in one of the best two conferences in college football this year -- even if you factor in the SEC East. One of them will lose a game for the first time this season.
But Auburn and Oregon are not traditional college football powers. As for the game itself, there's a part of me that wants to invoke Year2's barnburner rule here: If everyone agrees that a game is going to be a track meet, then we're probably in for a low-scoring game. Oregon's is actually pretty decent, and very good against the run. Auburn's is mediocre, and good against the run. Part of that is because both teams have forced other teams to pass for their points by taking big leads, and part of it is because at least parts of the defenses work quite well. Oregon faced three.
NEITHER OF THESE TEAMS IS a stranger to controversy. The Ducks outscored their first three opponents 189-13. Auburn also surprised a lot of people. Auburn started as a good team, picked up a little steam with Cam Newton's Heisman-worthy showing against South Carolina, then emerged as the favorite when the Gamecocks defeated Alabama and the Tigers annihilated Arkansas and beat LSU. Of course, that story will likely be led with Newton's 3,998 yards of total offense and 48 TDs -- along with whatever he adds onto to the total tonight. Would Auburn have defeated South Carolina without Newton? LSU or Alabama? You're not supposed to be able to turn a team around with one player in football, but Newton has done just that at Auburn.
Auburn's schedule was probably a little bit tougher, but Oregon's was no slouch.
YEAR2: For my part, my main interest in this national championship game is each team's running game. Auburn had a higher ranked rushing defense and they had nearly identical YPC figures, but that can be misleading. College football stats categorize sacks and sack yardage as carries and rushing yards. Auburn's rushing offense (6.12 YPC) was consistently able to gain more yards per carry than opposing defenses allowed. The Tigers' best rushing day was against LSU, where its 8.46 YPC was 3.81 above LSU's season average of 4.65 YPC allowed. In all, Auburn averaged a gain of 1.37 YPC above its opponents' averages.
Oregon was also great at rushing the ball (5.99 YPC), but not quite at the same extent that Auburn was. Two teams were able to hold Oregon below their defenses' season averages: Arizona State (3.57 for the Ducks, below Sun Devils' 4.11 average) and Cal (3.28 for the Ducks, below the Golden Bears' 4.37 average). In all, Oregon averaged a gain of 0.88 YPC above its opponents' averages.
Auburn's defense actually yielded 4.86 YPC against BCS conference competition with sacks factored out. Auburn's best rushing defense happened up the middle where Nick Fairley haunts. Overall, Auburn's rushing defense actually allowed opponents to rush for 0.22 YPC more than their season averages. Oregon's rushing defense was a different story. Now, a word on Oregon's uptempo offense. All things being equal, I think Oregon probably wins the game.
