In the road race circuit in Valencia on Sunday (6/24/2012), Rio start from fourth position. Carlin Marussia rider demonstrates a good start, even poking directly into second place on the first lap ahead of team-mate Max Chilton, and Nathanael Berthon.
Rio Haryanto should receive a barrage of pressure from Chilton. However, he managed to survive and even build up the distance with Chilton from 0.6 seconds up to almost 3 seconds.
Rio Haryanto then passed James Calado trying to take over the leading position. Unlucky for him, his car was bumped by a car instead Calado on a bend on lap-20. Rio cars damaged front wing and he could not continue the race.
"At the start of the race I had a feeling of having a chance to win this race. Several times I have a gap to catch up Calado, but errors in the last hairpin bend made my car bumped by a car Calado, resulting in destroyed my front wing and I was out of the race," said Rio Haryanto.
"I am a little disappointed with what had happened, but on the other hand I feel quite satisfied has been able to demonstrate the potential and ability of my race and have tried and struggled up. And also, from this moment, I am more confident that I could win the race in the GP2 Series this highly competitive,"he added.
Throughout the 23 lap race was eventually won by the rider in Arden, Luis Razia, with a time of 46 minutes 7.255 seconds. Calado finished second, while third place belonged to Fabio Leimer.
Rio Haryanto not just be disappointed because it failed to finish. After an investigation, stewards decided Rio guilty over the incident with Calado. Rio was penalized five grid back in the race GP2 feature race at Silverstone Circuit UK, 6-8 July.
