Former NBA player Nick Van Exel's 20-year-old, Nickey Van Exel, has been accused of murdering a friend and was arrested on Dec. 29. Van Exel turned himself in and is said to be cooperating with police.
File this one under "Holy Crap": the 20-year-old son of former Laker Nick Van Exel has been charged with capital murder in Texas. The elder Van Exel, apparently, works for the Atlanta Hawks these days as a player development instructor.
Nickey Van Exel, the 20-year-old son of former NBA great Nick Van Exel, is being held on $1 million bond after being charged with one count of capital murder in Dallas, according to police.
Paul Johnson, the younger Van Exel's attorney, told The Associated Press that Van Exel and Eyo were allegedly playing with a shotgun at a home in Garland, Texas, a suburb of Dallas, when the gun accidentally fired. The senior Van Exel played 13 years in the NBA, appearing in 880 games and starting 670.
