Norwegian Cruise Line - Jainchill is serving as Guest Editor of The Cruise Log while USA TODAY Cruise Editor Gene Sloan is away.

Ever wonder what it's like to work on a cruise ship?
Norwegian Cruise Line's CEO Kevin Sheehan did, and he gained a deeper appreciation for NCL's 15,000 crewmembers after enduring "backbreaking" work to star in an episode of the CBS reality TV series, Undercover Boss.
During the NCL episode, Sheehan carries heavy trays through a packed dining room, cleans cabins and toilets, guides climbers on a rappelling wall, and works alongside a deck repairman.
"It's hard."
Sheehan said they beefed up his disguise after that.

With more than 16,000 employees from 70 bcountries, it's hard to oversee everything, but Sheehan spends as much time as possible on the ships trying to connect and supervise.
That style of management, hoever, nearly became his undoing.

Back-breaking work

It requires carrying heavy trays with a flourish across football field-sized rooms, and squatting down to shoulder heavy trays.
Sheehan was particularly comfortable, however, in the crew quarters. Most people envision crowded bunk rooms with four to six employees sharing a cramped space.

Most crew members get their own individual cabins, complete with fridge and flat-screen TV. It was easy to foresee part of what would happen with Michael when he finally met Sheehan sans disguise.
