Actor James Arness, who protected the citizens of Dodge City as Marshal Matt Dillon for 20 years (1955-1975) on the TV series “Gunsmoke” has died of natural causes. No wonder “Gunsmoke” wore so well. The Huffington Post has more on Arness’ life and career. Link -via Uncle John’s Blog.
James Arness, a bigger-than-life actor who kept the peace as Marshal Matt Dillon on 'Gunsmoke' for its 20-year run, died Friday of natural causes at his home in Brentwood, Calif., his family told the Los Angeles Times.
The 6 foot 7 Arness towered over the cast, including Dillon's deputy, Chester, played by Dennis Weaver. It was Wayne that recommended James Arness for 'Gunsmoke' and an on-air endorsement from the film great himself.
Arness is survived by his wife, Janet, two sons and six grandchildren.
